About us

Opening Doors PTA is a unit of the California PTA in the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District dedicated to supporting children with special needs. We believe that every child, regardless of ability, deserves a quality education that can equip him/her for a  better future. We support the special needs community in the Peninsula Bay Area by providing:

  • education to parents and the community through workshops and focus groups, 

  • mini-grants and classroom funds to teachers, therapists, and other organizations

  • after school classes for kids with special needs

  • advocacy for equal rights and inclusion

On behalf of families with special needs, we sincerely thank our supporters in BRSSD for partnering with us! We have the privilege to sponsor the following for our community in the 2019-2020 school year (updated Jan 2020):

-Professional development on Next Generation Science Standards for Special Day Class teachers

-Changing Perspectives- Disability Awareness Curriculum

-Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support School-Wide Information System(PBIS SWIS)

-Co-teaching training for general ed and special ed staff

-Lindamood-Bell training for all learning center education specialists

-Every Child Counts Symposium attendance sponsorship 

-Miller Function and Participation Scales Evaluation for assessing students with fine motor deficits

-ABLLS-R Curriculum materials for students with autism

-Professional development on The Clinical Assessment of Pragmatics 

-Positive Environments Network of Trainers (PENT) Forum attendance sponsorship

-CAS2: Cognitive Assessment System

-Occupational therapy equipment and tools for supporting students' handwriting, sensory integration and coordination.

-Registered Behavior Technician training and certification for the BRSSD Behavior Assistants Team

Educational Workshops

We offer workshops on a variety of topics related to special needs, including disability rights, special education, learning disabilities etc. 

After School


Our after school programs, including media art and social skills classes, are specifically designed for students   


We organize events to meet the community’s needs (parent teacher forum, holiday parties) and connect families with each other  


We collaborate with local organizations such as Miracle League of SF Bay Area, Fenixia Foundation, Palo Alto CAC, Geek Club Books, Down Syndrome Connection of the Bay Area, Curiodyssey etc.
